Marching Band Percussion Instructor

Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for a Marching Band Percussion Instructor. The ideal candidate would coordinate all percussion activities with assistance from the Director for the Buchanan High School Marching Band.

Essential duties and responsibilities: Other duties appropriate to the position may be assigned.

● Working with the Band Director to audition and assign instrumentation and parts

● Developing and delivering a fundamentals-based instructional method

● Maintaining, inventorying, and ordering percussion equipment

● Writing and/or teaching a variety of cadences and warm ups

● Modification/rewrites of printed percussion book to adapt to skill level

● Instruction of both battery and sideline percussion (a pit assistant is provided for pre-camp and band camp)

● Teaching of basic corps style marching maneuvers

● Instruction of marching band drill

● Attending all required rehearsals and performances

● Scheduling additional percussion rehearsals outside of full band time

Displays tact and courtesy when dealing with students, staff and others
Familiar with MCBA or similar competitive circuit
Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration
Maintains regular, reliable and punctual attendance
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District

● 1 Scholastic Marching Band Competition

● MCBA Competitive Season Pre-Show Saturday Rehearsals

● Other Commitments as Agreed Upon By Instructor and Director

● Post Season Wrap Up/ Clean Up

Supervisory Responsibilities: Marching band percussion students.

Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
Language Skills
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, students, or other employees of the organization
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision and color vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors and will occasionally work indoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

Preferred: Experience working with high school aged children. Experience with MCBA or Similar competitive circuit.

Starting date: Tentatively June 10, 2025
Compensation: $2,000 stipend. To be paid in two installments (post band camp and upon the completion of the marching season).
