Marching Band Color Guard Instructor

Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for a Marching Band Color Guard Instructor. The ideal candidate would coordinate all color guard activities with assistance from the Director for the Buchanan High School Marching Band.  

Essential duties and responsibilitiesOther duties appropriate to the position may be assigned

  • working with the Band Director to audition and assign leadership
  • developing and delivering a fundamentals-based based instructional method
  • maintaining, inventorying, and ordering color guard equipment
  • writing and/or teaching a variety of work and warm ups
  • teaching basic dance and marching fundamentals 
  • teaching of marching band drill
  • attending all required rehearsals and performances (see below)
  • scheduling additional color guard rehearsals outside of full band time
  • assist in coordinating fundraisers for color guard equipment and uniforms
  • Displays tact and courtesy when dealing with students, staff and others
  • Familiar with MCBA or similar competitive circuit and is experienced on flag as well as additional equipment
  • Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District

  • Pre-Camp Full Band Rehearsals 
  • Band Camp
  • Post Camp Rehearsals Before School Begins 
  • Post Camp Weekly Sectionals 
  • After School Rehearsals Once School Begins 
  • 1 Scholastic Marching Band Competition 
  • Competitive MCBA Saturday Pre-Show rehearsals and evening performances
  • Post Season Wrap Up/Clean Up 
  • Other Commitments as Agreed Upon by the Instructor and Director

Supervisory Responsibilities: Marching band color guard students.

  • Education and/or Experience
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
  • Language Skills
    • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, students, or other employees of the organization
  • Mathematical Skills
    • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers
  • Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision and color vision.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors and will occasionally work indoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

Preferred: Experience working with high school aged children. Experience with MCBA or similar competitive marching band circuit. 

Estimated Time of Service: 105 Hours

Position Details:

  • Title: Marching Band Color Guard Instructor – Buchanan High School
  • Reports to: Buchanan High School Principal, Mr. Brian Pruett
  • Starting date: Tentatively June 10, 2024
  • Compensation:  $2,000 stipend. To be paid in two installments (post band camp and upon the completion of the marching season).
