SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Special Education Paraprofessional provides direct support and assistance with students with

special needs in an educational setting. Working closely with the special education teacher and

other school staff, the paraprofessional helps facilitate the student's academic, social, and

emotional development. This position requires a compassionate and patient individual who is

committed to ensuring the success and well-being of the student.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide individualized assistance and support to a student with special needs throughout

the school day.

2. Academic Assistance: Assist the student with completing assignments, understanding

instructional materials, and staying on task during lessons.

3. Behavior Management: Implement behavior management strategies outlined by the

special education team to support positive behavior and minimize disruptions.

4. Personal Care: Assist with the student's personal care needs, such as toileting, feeding,

and mobility, as necessary.

5. Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with the special education

teacher, and other school staff regarding the student's progress, challenges, and

accomplishments.

6. Instructional Support: Support the implementation of individualized education plans

(IEPs) by reinforcing skills and goals identified in the student's plan.

7. Adaptations and Modifications: Help modify instructional materials and activities to

accommodate the student's unique learning needs and abilities.

8. Social Skills Development: Facilitate opportunities for the student to practice social skills

and interact with peers in inclusive settings.

9. Safety and Supervision: Ensure the safety and well-being of the student at all times,

including during transitions between activities and during outdoor or off-campus

activities.

10. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of the student's progress, behavior, and any

incidents or concerns that arise during the school day.

Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education, psychology,

or related fields preferred.

2. Previous experience working with individuals with special needs, particularly in an

educational setting, is highly desirable.

3. Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others.

4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

5. Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively as part of a team.

6. Physical ability to assist with lifting, transferring, and providing personal care as needed.

7. Willingness to undergo background checks and other screenings required by the school or

district.
