Job Title: High School Building Trades Teacher

Position Type: Full-Time, August – June 196 contractual days

Job Summary: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced High School Building Trades Teacher to instruct students in the construction of a residential house, while adhering to Michigan’s educational guidelines and building codes. This hands-on position will provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable skills in the construction industry, from foundation to finishing, and experience the complete process of home building. The Instructor will lead students in the design, planning, and building of a house while ensuring all work meets industry standards, safety protocols, and Michigan-specific regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Curriculum Development & Instruction:
    • Develop and deliver a comprehensive curriculum that includes the fundamentals of residential construction, safety protocols, blueprint reading, carpentry, HVAC, electrical work, plumbing, drywall installation, roofing, and finishing techniques.
    • Ensure all lessons align with Michigan’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards and guidelines. State Approved Career and Technical (CTE) Credential(s).
    • Provide both classroom instruction and hands-on training opportunities for students.
  2. House Construction Project:
    • Supervise and guide students in the actual construction of a house, from the initial excavation to the final interior finishing.
    • Assign tasks and manage student work on-site to ensure projects meet building codes, safety standards, and quality requirements.
    • Coordinate with local building inspectors and adhere to Michigan’s construction regulations and codes.


  1. Student Safety and Supervision:
    • Enforce proper safety procedures and ensure that students understand and follow safety protocols while using tools, machinery, and materials.
    • Provide ongoing supervision during hands-on projects to maintain a safe working environment.
  2. Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Monitor student progress and provide feedback on skill development. Prepare report cards.
    • Assess student performance through both practical and written evaluations, including projects, exams, and portfolio work.  Attend Parent/Teacher Conferences each trimester.
    • Collaborate with other educators and staff to track student progress and provide additional support as necessary.
  3. Budget Management:

Collaborate with Director of Finance and Superintendent in maintaining budget parameters.

  1. Community and Industry Engagement:
    • Foster relationships with local building industry professionals to provide students with networking and real-world learning opportunities.
    • Promote the program within the community to encourage future student enrollment and potential partnerships with local businesses.
    • Develop ideas in which the program can assist in the community.
  2. Professional Development:
    • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay up-to-date with industry trends, safety practices, and Michigan’s construction codes.
    • Attend faculty meetings, curriculum workshops, and any other district-required professional development sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Construction Management, or related field preferred. Vocational or trade certification in construction or related discipline required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in residential construction. Previous teaching or instructional experience in a high school setting is preferred but not required.
  • Certifications: Must hold or be able to obtain Michigan Department of Education (MDE) teaching certification in Building Trades or a related field.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of residential construction techniques, tools, and materials.
    • Ability to teach and motivate high school students in a hands-on, collaborative learning environment.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, school staff, and community members.
